january 2026 update

Hello and welcome to the Keep the Scenic Rim Scenic (KTSRS) news and information email group.

You are receiving this email as you’ve expressed interest in receiving information and updates from our KTSRS No Incinerator for the Scenic Rim campaign.

We are running this campaign under the banner of Keep the Scenic Rim Scenic which is a subcommittee of the Boonah Organisation for a Sustainable Shire (BOSS).

Historically KTSRS successfully worked with concerned farmers and residents of the Scenic Rim, who joined forces for more than a decade to protect the region’s clean air, land and water by rejecting the threat of proposed coal and coal seam gas industries. The Kerry Blockade of 2012 was the keystone moment of time in our community activism.

This community driven campaign was ultimately victorious in 2022 when the Qld Government withdrew all coal seam gas leases covering the Scenic Rim. Our state and local government leaders had realised the value developed within the region, as by being free from these toxic industries, it had been able to grow and flourish into the agriculture, tourism, and environmental hot spot we enjoy today.

In 2023 the success of our KTSRS community campaign culminated in the 18 week Moving Mountains – People Power in Action exhibition at The Centre Beaudesert.

Now our region is facing the threat of another toxic industry being introduced at Bromelton, right on the doorstep of the town of Beaudesert, Waste to Energy Incineration.

This recently published article gives an excellent overview of just some of the associated issues with this industry: Waste incinerators: the latest bin fire in Australian climate policy

We are concerned with a number of other potential issues associated with the construction of the proposed incinerator. These include economic threats to our Scenic Rim brand, agriculture, produce and tourism, social, environmental and health issues, increased heavy vehicle traffic and the visual impact of a thirty story high smokestack. We are also extremely concerned with how incineration destroys finite resources that the recycling, reuse and composting sectors desperately need as the backbone of a strong circular economy.

Incineration is an inefficient and expensive method of waste management, and technology failures in European facilities are well documented, as are impacts from toxicity on food production.

We will be covering these various concerns through this email group, with factual links and updates to relevant articles and papers, media, upcoming public meetings and advising you of presentations to be made to local community and business groups.

Also we will cover information on the circular economy and sustainable, achievable alternatives to incineration as waste management for the Scenic Rim. There is great potential for our region to become a leader and model community in circular economy waste management strategies as this example from the proactive community in Bega have achieved: Home - Bega Circular Valley

We have also linked with other communities facing this threat around Australia and they have a vast library of online material to be accessed which we will share as relevant. Standing together with other regional communities gives added strength to our campaign.

Please sign and share our online petition. We are presenting our case at Council's March strategy workshop, and many signatures would support the campaign.

You may also like to join our No Incinerator Scenic Rim! Facebook group for more up to the minute information from these communities, and regular posts from experts and scientists:

We also have a No Incinerator for Scenic Rim! Linktree  that you may like to join. This is an easy access, online resource containing a growing catalogue of material to support our campaign.

We promise not to overload you with emails, but expect to hear from us on a regular basis, and if you have any questions or are interested in becoming more involved in the campaign ( the more the merrier!) please contact our team by email via: contact-keep-the-scenic-rim-scenic@googlegroups.com

Please feel free to share information of concern about this proposed waste incinerator to your networks, family and friends, to encourage community discussion and awareness. Also please invite them to join this email group and the Facebook page if they are interested in learning more, as we are finding that the many community members are completely unaware of this proposal and its scale and potential impacts.

Thank you if you have already attended the first of our forums, and for taking an interest in our community driven campaign!
